Tell us a little about yourself.

I'm a first generation Mexican woman who grew up on the border. Traveling to other places in my young adulthood helped me put my home into perspective, has humbled me and has made me feel honored to have been border bred. I love my community and set have my goals to help improve my home. I am currently studying to be a midwife because I believe that mothers should have choice about where and how they want to give birth. Working with women and the future border generation is a true honor.

What made you decide to pursue your degree?

Maternidad La Luz is a midwifery school located in south central El Paso that is known about all around the world. When I became acquainted with the local student midwives I saw that there was no one at MLL representing Mexican local women. I felt like it was my turn to step up and take care of my sisters.

What are some of the challenges you have faced?

I have not personally escaped the economic troubles that haunt the border. As a young person who has worked many jobs, I quickly discovered how difficult it is to find a decent paying job in El Paso. Telemarketing companies and Fast Food restaurants are the new maquiladoras for my generation and opportunities are skim. Like most El Pasoans, I don't have financially wealthy parents nor a trust fund. Without the help of the Women's Fund I simply would not be able to pursue my career as a midwife. It feels so good to know that my community backs me up, that people recognize that investing in me is investing in the future.

What has your experience working with the Women’s Fund been like?

It's been wonderful to work with the Women's Fund. Everyone I have been in contact with has been sincere and graceful when wanting to hear my story.

Do you have any words of inspiration to other women who might be facing struggles in their lives?

I think it's important for women to recognize their true value and to live this life as if it were their last!!! I feel like everything that I have wanted to do in my life has come to me because I worked hard looking for creative ways of making it happen. There is nothing that feeds me more than learning new things. For women who think it is too late to pursue passion, a new career.. I have only two words, two syllables---- DO IT.
