Cynthia says, "If I've gotten this far at a young age, then others can do it too" May 14, 2010
Tell us a little about yourself
I graduated early from high school, and graduated with two Associates degrees(18), and owned my first car of the year at the age of 17. I am currently attending UTEP and plan on graduating early as well.
What are some of the challenges you have faced?
I had my daughter at the age of 15 and have raised her on my own since. I have to work full time and attend school full time while taking care of my daughter. I come from a single mother of four, me being the oldest meaning economically disabled. I had to struggle without a vehicle, money, a care taker for my daughter, and support. But I pushed myself hard and had my mind set for a better life.
What has your experience working with the Women’s Fund been like?
It has been a spectacular experience, because I was nervous to attend The University of El Paso because of tuition. I wasn’t sure if my financial aid would cover everything, and I was correct. My financial aid covered my tuition and didn’t leave me with much left over for books and supplies. Thanks to The Women’s Fund Scholarship I was able to cover those expenses as well as saving to pay for summer classes.
Do you have any words of inspiration to other women who might be facing struggles in their lives?
If I have gotten this far at a very young age with no support from anyone whatsoever as a single mom then others can do it too.
