Tracy Schwartz of the Family Jewels June 5, 2009
Tell us a little about yourself.
I love making art of any kind...it's my passion along with spending time with my husband, two sons and Pug Pearl.
You lived in Northern California for a while. What’s it like being back in El Paso?
It's great to be back. I like the slower pace of El Paso a lot and think the people here are so nice. It's also a super place to raise boys!
How did you start in the jewelry making business?
I studied design in college and when I started going a little nuts being a stay at home mom, I turned to jewelry making. My mother and sister-in-law are both photographers, so I had awesome photographs of my sons which I incorporated into my pieces...hence the Family Jewels was born.
Do you have a favorite jewelry designer or artist?
For jewelry, I really admire Me & Ro for their Eastern inspired designs and Sanskrit text. I also like Megan Auman for her use of steel with a feminine twist. Alexander Calder is a favorite artist. I think he was ahead of his time....he made some cool jewelry pieces, too.
What advice would you give a woman interested in starting her own business?
Find something that you love doing, then it doesn't seem like work. Keep your starting cost and overhead low, so that it's not a ball and chain. And, find a niche that someone hasn't filled.
